 Kliff Kingsbury: The Rise of a Football Innovator

Kliff Kingsbury is a name that has become synonymous with success in the world of college football. The former Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach has been a part of some of the most successful teams in the history of the program, and his impact on the game of football is undeniable.

Kingsbury was born in San Antonio, Texas, and attended New Braunfels High School. He was a standout quarterback for the Unicorns and was named the District 25-5A MVP in 1998. He was also named to the All-State team in both his junior and senior seasons. Kingsbury then went on to play college football at Texas Tech University. He was a four-year starter for the Red Raiders and was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2002. He was also a two-time All-Big 12 selection and was a finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award in 2002. After college, Kingsbury was drafted by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He spent two seasons with the Patriots but was released in 2005. He then signed with the Denver Broncos but was released before the start of the 2006 season. Kingsbury then returned to Texas Tech, where he served as an offensive assistant coach from 2006-2008. He was then promoted to offensive coordinator in 2009 and was instrumental in the Red Raiders’ success. He was named the Big 12 Offensive Coordinator of the Year in 2010 and was a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2011. In 2012, Kingsbury was named the head coach of the Red Raiders. He led the team to a 7-5 record in his first season and was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year. He then led the Red Raiders to an 8-5 record in 2013 and was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. Kingsbury continued to have success at Texas Tech, leading the Red Raiders to a 7-6 record in 2014 and a 7-5 record in 2015. He was then fired after the 2016 season but was quickly hired by the University of Houston as their head coach. Kingsbury had a successful two-year stint at Houston, leading the Cougars to a 13-11 record. He then returned to Texas Tech in 2018 and has since led the Red Raiders to a 9-4 record in 2019 and a 10-3 record in 2020.
